Hazel Iris Wilson was born on 30 May 1900 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, UK, daugther of Annie Margaret and Cecil Wilson, a businessman. She had two eldest brothers. In 1926, she married the Scottish Eric Elrington Addis (1899-1941) , a naval officer. By her husband's job, the couple lived in New Zealand until his retirement in 1928.
