Born and raised in New Orleans of Creole heritage, "The Refugees" is fiction based on fact tracing the factual Daubert family from privateers in Saint-Domingue to refugees in New Orleans. The story continues into the Newman-Daubert family and deals with Captain Francis Newman (killed at Vicksburg, 1863), and through his son, Hollis Louis Newman and wife Eleanor Rely.
