Sobre este livro

"The author describes electromagnetic surface modes in detail. He demonstrates that the low-temperature interaction energy in a system can be expressed as the zero-point energy of these modes and derives the result also for the finite temperatures. The modes depend on the dielectric properties of the materials and the geometric shapes of the objects, so dielectric properties of different types of material are demonstrated in detail. Modes are derived at flat interfaces. From these modes, surface tensions as well as forces between half spaces are derived. Very recent theoretical and experimental results for the Casimir force between metal plats are compared and discussed. Modes at surfaces of objects of other geometrical shapes (spheres, cylinders, needles) are derived. The author discusses colloids and demonstates how the forces are involved in the stability of these."--Jacket.
