Orphaned and with no knowledge of her past, Madeleine must try to make a way for herself, first as a scullery maid and finally as an actress. Duncan, Lord Risley, is challenged by a bet to try his luck with actress Madeleine Charron when he should be looking for a suitable wife. He takes her to dinner, and discovers strong feelings for this beautiful woman who is so clearly a lady. But how can he contemplate marrying outside his class?
