In the trail-herding town of Haymes, they knew him as Logan Marlowe, and he was trusted and respected as the town constable. What he had been before, no one asked -- but Marlowe himself knew that he had been with the Wild Bunch, that he had robbed banks, just as a couple of owl hooters were doing the day he first found himself in Haymes. He had acted instinctively, because he'd come here to go straight. He had shot it out with the bank robbers just as if he'd been wearing a star and that was his job. The town called him a hero and pinned a badge on him. Then a woman showed up in Haymes -- Kathleen Wisdom, the sister of Ben Wisdom, the newspaperman who had been killed recently, when trail drivers brought a herd through town. Due to the chaotic nature of circumstances, Ben's death had been called an accident. But had Ben Wisdom been on the trail of something which had led to his killing? Kathleen was determined to find out who had killed him and why.
