Madeleine, a young historian who works at the University of Caen, begins to translate the first page of a journal that is nearly a thousand years old. Written by master embroiderers in the court of King Edward, the vellum leaves contain not only the story of the secret alliance that would eventually put the kingdom of England in Norman hands, but also reveal one of the most exciting mysteries in the history of medieval Europe: the commissioning and construction of the famous Bayeux Tapestry, and a key to the identity of some of the enigmatic figures in it. The unexpected death of Madeleine's mother in Canterbury will encourage a return to her Saxon origins and a meeting with Nicholas, a handsome restaurateur that will change the course of her life.
