The text is designed to increase interest and motivation in reading by representing a variety of careers, male and female roles, and ethnic groups in the stories. The readers require the student to participate in activities such as: noting and explaining details to detect propaganda devices; verifying accuracy of details by referring to other references; using an unabridged dictionary; and constructing and interpreting current events, historical events, and scientific events charts. The student is also asked to compare different sources of information and write summary paragraphs. All components and supplementary materials including "Earthrise," "Sunspinners, " and "Spacetone, " 3 additional texts at the same level with similar content and format; activity books, which provide written exercises to supplement the texts; duplicating masters; and competency tests may be purchased separately.
